Anglo American has flagged major changes to the multibillion-pound UK fertiliser mine it bought last year and replaced the former investment banker who originally planned the project.

In a statement ahead of its annual investor day, the FTSE 100 miner said it had almost finished a review of the Woodsmith mine, near WhitbyAllies of imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny called for nationwide protests across Russia on Wednesday to support him. Navalny started a prison hunger strike three weeks ago to protest what he says is inadequate medical treatment for his back pains and officials, and found that a “number of elements of the project’s original design would benefit from modification”. Its new development plan will not be completed until the end of next year.

Anglo took over the project — Britain’s biggest new mine in decades — early last year after acquiring its cash strapped parent Sirius Minerals for £405m.

It also announced on Friday that it was replacing Chris Fraser, the head of its fledgling Crop Nutrients division and the former boss of Sirius, with Tom McCulleyThe per-capita approach to vaccine di..., the executive leading the development of its Quellaveco copper mine Peru. Frasers plant in Kalamazoo, Mich., afte, who led the project for 12 years, will step into a new “strategic projects” role at Anglo.
